Oliver’s Origin Story
Part 3: Oliver’s Origin: How did he get here?
Before Oliver hopped on his skateboard, he was a spark of my imagination — a quick sketch that turned into something much bigger, making me laugh out loud as he came together.
I started drawing Oliver with no agenda, just knowing that I wanted a one-of-a-kind character that would capture attention. As I drew, his personality began to take shape. Before long, he wasn’t just a platypus — he was Oliver.
Why a Platypus?
Aside from my enjoyment of the word ‘platypus’, they are one of nature’s quirkiest creations — part mammal, part bird, part reptile — an original that doesn’t want to seem to give up, or conform. Oliver’s character mirrors this essence. He doesn’t fit in a box, and that’s what makes him relatable, especially for kids who are figuring out this world, where they belong.
I think I was also committed to Platypus as they seem to have a grin molded into their beak. I think it’s a beak?
From Painting to Page
Once I knew who Oliver was, his story began to write itself. I imagined him taking on a new challenge, exploring, making new friends, and trying things he’d never done before — including skateboarding (little spoiler alert for the book). Oliver’s book will be about courage, curiosity, and embracing what makes you unique. Regardless, Oliver is just getting started.
No matter how you support Oliver, whether it’s buying a product, print, or pre-ordering a book, you’re helping bring a new character into the world. Every purchase supports bringing Oliver’s full story to life.
Peace, love, and light -
